Grandma’s Butternuts are the ultimate crowd-pleasing cookies. With their simple recipe and fantastic taste, it’s no wonder I make at least 500 of these during Christmas time. Let me share with you this timeless recipe, passed down through generations.
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup of room temperature butter, plus 1 tablespoon
- 1/2 cup of powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1 3/4 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 package of caramel chips (6 oz.)
- 1 cup of finely chopped nuts
Rum Glaze:
- 3 cups of powdered sugar
- 3 or 4 tablespoons of milk or water
- 1 teaspoon of rum extract
Topping:
- 1/2 cup of chopped nuts
Instructions:
- Start by creaming together the butter, powdered sugar, and salt until they become light and fluffy.
- Mix in the flour until well-combined.
- Add the caramel chips and 1 cup of finely chopped nuts. Mix everything together by hand, ensuring the ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Shape the dough into small balls, using a few teaspoons at a time. Place the balls about 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
- Bake the cookies in a preheated oven at 325°F for 15 to 20 minutes. They should be firm but not brown. Allow them to cool on wire racks.
- While the cookies are cooling, prepare the rum glaze. Mix together 3 cups of powdered sugar, rum extract, and milk (or water) until you achieve a smooth consistency.
- Once the cookies have cooled, you can dip them into the rum glaze or use a spoon to pour it over them.
- Finally, sprinkle the cookies with the remaining chopped nuts and allow the icing to settle.
And there you have it, Grandma’s Butternuts – a delicious treat that will leave everyone craving for more. Enjoy these delightful cookies with a cup of tea or share them with loved ones during the holidays. Happy baking!
