It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of actor James B. Sikking, best known for his remarkable performances on popular TV shows such as “Hill Street Blues” and “Doogie Howser.” Sikking’s talent, dedication, and memorable roles have left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Sikking had acting in his blood from a young age. He attended UCLA, where he deepened his passion for theater arts. However, his time at college was not solely devoted to his craft; Sikking also served his country as a member of the Army. Interestingly, it was his drill instructor’s commanding presence that would later inspire his portrayal of the stern character Howard on “Hill Street Blues.”

In an interview with The Seattle Times, Sikking shared, “The drill instructor looked like he had steel for hair and his uniform had so much starch in it, you knew it would sit in the corner when he took it off in the barracks.” He added, “So when I started to play Howard, I picked out the way he should be dressed. It had to be a very military look. He had to have those jump boots. When people asked me where I got the idea for his look, I told them it was the same look I had in the Army.”

Sikking’s talent and dedication to his craft shone through in every role he undertook, earning him immense admiration from audiences worldwide. Reflecting on the success of “Hill Street Blues,” Sikking expressed his astonishment, saying, “When the Emmy nominations were announced, I was dumbfounded. I thought I was about to be unemployed, and we ended up being the most-awarded show that year.” He went on to proclaim, “I’ve been an actor for 50 years, and when I look back at the show, I think it was the best show I was ever on.”

Sikking’s contribution to the world of film was also noteworthy, with appearances in movies such as “The Pelican Brief,” “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock,” “Outland,” and “Fever Pitch.” Alongside his extensive body of work, Sikking’s talent and on-screen charisma were undeniable, making him a beloved figure in the industry.

On July 13, 2024, Sikking peacefully passed away at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving family at his Los Angeles home. His wife, Florine, whom he married in 1962, shared 61 incredible years by his side. Sikking’s legacy is further carried on by their two children and four grandchildren.
