Homemade Turtle Candy… these delectable tiny clusters outperform any store-bought caramel turtles!

These Pecan Caramel Turtle sweet Bars are a tasty, easy-to-make bar variation of the Turtle sweet. They’re even better because they’re another recipe from my grandmother’s cookbook.

Homemade Turtle Candies are a sweet, chewy, and crunchy treat created with caramelized pecan clusters covered with melted chocolate. This is the PERFECT 4-ingredient dish to make for family and friends over the holidays, or simply for a weekend treat. For a sweet and salty variation, try my Pretzel Turtles.

12 ounces soft caramels (either homemade or store-bought)
6 oz. pecans (toasted halves)
8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate (chips are fine)

Steps to Make It: 1 Collect all of the components.
02 Prepare a cookie sheet by lining it with aluminum foil or parchment paper and coating it with nonstick cooking spray.
03 Arrange the pecans in four-pecan clusters, with each pecan pointing in a different direction (as if they were turtle legs). Alternatively, you may just arrange them on the baking sheet in little clusters.
04 If the caramels are still wrapped, place them in a microwave-safe bowl. If they are too stiff, add a teaspoon of water to soften the final product. Microwave for 30 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds, until melted.
05 Allow the caramel to cool somewhat so that it isn’t blazing hot, then drop a spoonful of caramel into each nut cluster with a spoon or a small candy scoop. Because they’re meant to look rustic, don’t stress about keeping the turtles round or having some of the pecans poking through.
06 Microwave or melt chocolate chips in a double boiler.
07 Spoon the melted chocolate over the caramel layer, allowing some to drop down the edges and prodding it around until it completely covers the top of the caramel.
08 Refrigerate the candy baking sheet for at least 30 minutes to allow the chocolate and caramel to thoroughly set.
09 Serve the turtles at room temperature for the best flavor and texture. Extras can be stored for up to two weeks in an airtight container in the refrigerator or at a cool room temperature.

Tip
When it comes to caramel, store-bought is the quickest and easiest option, but when it comes to taste, we always choose handmade whenever feasible. We won’t normally create a new batch of caramel especially for turtles, but if we’ve already made caramel and have some left over, turtles are a great way to use it! Try this soft caramels recipe and see if it doesn’t put your turtles over the top!
