Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Whole chicken
  • BBQ chicken dry rub*
  • Onion
  • BBQ sauce

Don’t worry about the seasoning – one packet of the dry rub is enough for the whole chicken. If you’re like me and want to be extra generous with the seasoning, feel free to use two packets. I recommend McCormick Grill Mates Applewood Rub for that perfect barbecue flavor.

How to Make Crock Pot Whole BBQ Chicken:

  1. Start by removing the chicken from its package and take out the gizzards from the cavity. Place the chicken on a paper towel to dry, and pat the outside of the chicken to remove any excess moisture.Step 1
  2. Slice an onion and place it at the bottom of your 6-8 quart oval slow cooker. This adds flavor and keeps the chicken juicy as it cooks.Step 2
  3. Sprinkle the dry BBQ rub all over the outside of the chicken, making sure to rub it in well. Don’t forget to season the inside of the chicken too.Step 3
  4. Place the seasoned chicken on top of the onions in your slow cooker. No need to add any additional liquid.Step 4
  5. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for about 8 hours. This low and slow cooking method ensures tender and flavorful chicken.
  6. Once the chicken is fully cooked, pour half a bottle of BBQ sauce on the outside of the chicken and spread it evenly on all sides. Put the cover back on and let it cook on low for another 15 minutes. This finishing touch adds a beautiful glaze to the chicken.
  7. Serve the chicken with the leftover BBQ sauce. Be careful when removing the chicken from the slow cooker, as it will be incredibly tender. I usually serve it directly from the pot with a side of extra BBQ sauce.

Note: This recipe also works with cut-up chicken pieces, not just whole chicken.

Now you’re ready to enjoy a delicious BBQ chicken that’s been slow-cooked to perfection. It’s tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Serve it up with your favorite sides and enjoy a delicious and hassle-free meal.
