Cowboys were crucial in the colonization of the western United States. They worked on cattle ranches, repairing fences and caring for horses. Originally, many cattle drives originated in Texas and finished on the Kansas Central Railroad.

Cattle driving was tough, hungry job. Cowboys would get up early in the morning and “lead” the herd to the next night’s stopping location. A herd of 3,000 cattle often necessitated a dozen cowboys. There was also a route manager, a camp cook, and a cowboy who was in charge of keeping track of the extra horses.
