Vanilla custard bars are a delectable treat that features a creamy vanilla custard filling and a buttery crust. Traditionally, they are baked until the custard is set and the crust is golden brown. Here’s a quick recipe for vanilla custard bars:

  • 1 12 cup all-purpose flour – 12 cup softened unsalted butter – 14 cup powdered sugar – 2 cups milk – 12 cup granulated sugar – 14 cup cornstarch – 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 tsp vanilla essence – pinch of salt
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter a 9-inch baking dish.
  2. Combine the all-purpose flour, softened butter, and powdered sugar in a mixing bowl. Mix the mixture with a pastry cutter or your fingertips until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Form the crust by pressing the mixture evenly into the oiled baking dish. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until softly golden brown, in a preheated oven. Set aside to cool after removing from the oven.
  4. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until it begins to steam. In a separate mixing bowl, add the granulated sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks, vanilla essence, and salt.
  5. While whisking continually, slowly pour about 1/2 cup of the hot milk into the egg mixture. This will help to temper the eggs and keep them from curdling. Whisk frequently as you gradually add the remaining milk.
  6. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook, stirring frequently, over medium heat until the custard thickens and comes to a soft boil. This should just take 5-7 minutes.
  7. Remove the custard from the heat after it has thickened and pour it over the cooled crust in the baking dish. Using a spatula, smooth the top.
  8. Return the baking dish to the oven for another 15-20 minutes, or until the custard is set and lightly browned on top.
  9. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool completely. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours after cooling to allow the custard to firm further.
  10. Once the vanilla custard bars have chilled, cut them into squares or rectangles. If desired, dust the tops with powdered sugar.
  11. Serve and have fun!
