If you’re looking for a budget-friendly and chic seating option for your outdoor space, look no further than a DIY cinder block bench. These versatile and easy-to-build benches are a great addition to any garden or patio area.

I came across this idea a few years ago when I built a cinder block planter wall. Since then, I’ve been intrigued by the concept of cinder block benches. However, it wasn’t until we moved to our new house last year that we finally had the perfect location for one.

We recently redid our paver patio, but the bench we had in mind was a little too large for that space. Luckily, we found the ideal spot at the front end of our driveway, where there’s a lovely garden bed area. Not only does this provide a convenient place for loading and unloading our cars, but it also offers a charming setting with a picket fence as the backdrop.

We often find ourselves working on DIY projects on this part of our driveway, and having a comfortable bench nearby to take a break is a real game-changer. It also allows us to enjoy the beautiful view of our front yard while taking a moment to relax.

One challenge we faced with this location was the slope. There was a significant 7″ difference from one end to the other, making it uncomfortable to sit on. To tackle this issue, we decided to do some extra site preparation work before building the bench. We created a raised bed with timbers to level out the ground. It only added one extra day of work, but the end result was well worth the effort.

Before we dive into the step-by-step process of building a cinder block bench, let’s talk a little bit about the materials. Although commonly referred to as cinder blocks, they are also known as concrete blocks or cement blocks. They are made by mixing concrete with other aggregates, such as fly ash. Hollow cinder blocks are typically used for construction purposes, while solid concrete blocks are more slender and suitable for our project.

One of the best things about cinder blocks is their versatility. They are incredibly adaptable and can be used for various other DIY projects. Here are a few ideas for inexpensive outdoor furniture you can create by adding a few pieces of wood:

  • Coffee table
  • Side table
  • Outdoor kitchen
  • Garden beds
  • Outdoor bar
  • Bookshelves (top with wooden planks)
  • Garden bench
  • Cinder block planter wall

I’ve included a link at the end of this post that provides instructions on how to make decorative planter box add-ons for concrete blocks. They add a touch of elegance to your bench and are a great way to showcase your favorite plants.
