- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 cup water
Optional ingredients for homemade frosting:
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar, as needed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa
- 1/2 cup water, as needed
Preparation:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F, and generously grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a large bowl, combine the sugar, flour, and cocoa. Stir in the baking soda and salt.
- Whisk in the oil, vanilla, and vinegar, and then add the water. Mix until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan, and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the center is cooked and a toothpick comes out clean.
- While waiting for the cake to cool, you can prepare the optional glaze. Mix the softened butter with 2 1/2 cups of powdered sugar until creamy. Add the vanilla and cocoa, and stir in 1/3 cup of water until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more water for a thinner frosting or more sugar to thicken.
