Ingredients:

For the sauce:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

For the beef and noodles:

  • 8 ounces flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces lo mein noodles or spaghetti
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 2 cups shredded cabbage
  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Preparation:

  1. Start by whisking together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, and sugar in a small bowl. Set the sauce aside for later use.
  2. Cook the lo mein noodles or spaghetti according to the package instructions until they are al dente. Drain them and set them aside.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the thinly sliced beef and cook it for 2-3 minutes until it is nicely browned. Once done, remove the beef from the skillet and set it aside.
  4. In the same skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and sauté it for about 30 seconds until it becomes fragrant.
  5. Now, it’s time to add the thinly sliced onion, red bell pepper, and mushrooms to the skillet. Stir-fry them for 3-4 minutes until the veggies become crisp-tender.
  6. Add the shredded cabbage and bean sprouts to the skillet. Continue stir-frying for another 2 minutes until the cabbage starts to wilt.
  7. Bring back the cooked beef to the skillet and pour in the prepared sauce. Toss everything together to ensure the ingredients are well coated with the delicious sauce. Cook for an additional 2 minutes until the sauce slightly thickens.
  8. Add the cooked noodles to the skillet and toss them well to combine with the other ingredients. Let them cook for another minute to heat through.
  9. It’s time to season with salt and pepper according to your taste. Finally, stir in the sliced green onions and remove the skillet from heat.
  10. Serve your homemade “Chinese Takeout” Beef Lo Mein hot, and if desired, garnish it with additional sliced green onions.

Enjoy your flavorful homemade beef lo mein that rivals your local Chinese takeout. Share this delightful dish with friends and family, and impress them with your culinary skills!
