Long John Silvers Chicken Planks (with their honey mustard dipping sauce) are one of my most beloved, and equally guilty, fast food pleasures. I enjoy all of their deep-fried delights, but the planks are my favorite. Here is the secret recipe to their wonderful batter, which in my opinion is what makes their food so decadently delicious!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tbs. cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 cups ginger ale, heated (1 min. in the microwave)

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add the heated ginger ale and mix together until well combined.
  3. Completely cover the fish, chicken, or shrimp in batter and deep fry in medium-high heated canola oil until golden brown.

Note: I like substituting chicken breast tenders for the full-sized breast fillets. Be sure to have some honey mustard dipping sauce on hand for those homemade chicken planks!

Now you can recreate the delicious Long John Silver’s deep fry batter in the comfort of your own home. With just a few simple ingredients and these easy-to-follow steps, you’ll be enjoying crispy and flavorful chicken, fish, or shrimp. The secret to this batter lies in the combination of all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. These ingredients work together to create a light and crispy coating that will make your homemade dishes taste just like the ones you love from Long John Silver’s.

To start, gather all of your ingredients. You’ll need 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 4 tablespoons of cornstarch, 1/2 teaspoon each of baking soda and baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 1/2 cups of heated ginger ale.

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. This will ensure that your batter is free of lumps and perfectly smooth.

Next, add the heated ginger ale to the dry ingredients. The heat from the ginger ale helps to activate the leavening agents (baking soda and baking powder), resulting in a light and airy batter. Mix everything together until well combined.

Now it’s time to get frying! Heat some canola oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, completely cover your fish, chicken, or shrimp in the batter. This will give you a nice, thick coating that will become beautifully golden brown when fried.

Carefully place the battered food into the hot oil and cook until golden brown. The cooking time will vary depending on what you’re frying, so keep an eye on it and adjust the heat as needed. When the food is cooked to perfection, remove it from the oil and let it drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

Serve your homemade chicken, fish, or shrimp planks with your favorite dipping sauce. I personally love a good honey mustard sauce to accompany these tasty treats.

Now you can enjoy the irresistible taste of Long John Silver’s right in your own kitchen. This deep fry batter recipe will have you creating restaurant-quality dishes that are sure to impress. So go ahead and indulge in some homemade goodness today!
