Here’s a quick and easy recipe for milk bread:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour – 1/4 cup sugar – 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast – 1/2 teaspoon salt – 1/2 cup milk – 1/4 cup water – 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter – 1 beaten egg (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. Combine the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt in a large mixing basin. Combine thoroughly.
  2. Warm the milk and water in a small saucepan over low heat until lukewarm (about 110°F/43°C). Take the pan off the heat.
  3. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the melted butter and lukewarm milk mixture. Using a wooden spoon or spatula, stir until a soft dough develops.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. For this stage, you can also use a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook.
  5. Roll the dough into a ball and set it aside in an oiled bowl. Cover the basin with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and set aside in a warm area for 1-2 hours, or until the dough has doubled in size.
  6. After the dough has risen, carefully punch it down to release the air. Return it to the floured surface and divide it into equal parts. You can roll it up or shape it into a loaf.
  7. Transfer the formed dough to a prepared baking sheet or loaf pan. Cover it again and allow it to rise for 30-45 minutes, or until it rises somewhat.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius).
  9. Brush the beaten egg wash over the top of the dough. This will result in a lovely golden crust on the bread.
  10. Bake the bread in a preheated oven for 25-30 minutes for rolls or 35-40 minutes for a loaf, or until golden brown and the bottom sounds hollow when tapped.
  11. Take the bread out of the oven and cool it on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Enjoy your tasty homemade milk bread! It’s great for sandwiches, toast, or just eating on its own.
