“A simple classic with tasty hamburger’steaks’ smothered in gravy and onions.” It’s a terrific way to spice up a pound of ground beef, and you probably have all of the ingredients on hand!”

Even when I was a kid, I could tell when we were eating hamburger steak for dinner. The aroma of those delectable onions and meaty gravy usually found its way outside. Probably from us kids rushing in and out all the time. It was one of my all-time favorite dinners.

Even when I was a kid, I could tell when we were eating hamburger steak for dinner. The aroma of those delectable onions and meaty gravy usually found its way outside. Probably from us kids rushing in and out all the time. It was one of my all-time favorite dinners.

It was always served with mashed potatoes or rice because those go so well with brown gravy! Sweet peas were the perfect complement to the savory.

Now, I’m not talking about Salisbury steak (which involves egg and frequently breadcrumbs), which is another of my favorites.

You’ll need the following items to make this recipe:

Ingredients

1 pound beef ground

1 egg

1 tablespoon bread crumbs

1/8 teaspoon black pepper, ground

1 tablespoon seasoned salt

a half teaspoon onion powder

a half teaspoon garlic powder

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp. vegetable oil

1 onion, thinly sliced

2 tbsp. all-purpose flour

1 quart beef broth

1 tbsp. cooking sherry

1 tablespoon seasoned salt

Directions

1-Combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, pepper, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce in a large mixing basin. Make 8 balls and flatten into patties.

2-In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the oil. Fry the patties and onion in the oil for about 4 minutes per side, or until the patties are beautifully browned. Transfer the beef patties to a platter and keep them heated.

3-Spread flour on top of the onions and drippings in the skillet. With a fork, whisk in the flour, scraping chunks of beef off the bottom as you go. Mix in the beef broth and sherry gradually. Season with seasoned salt to taste. Simmer and stir for 5 minutes over medium-low heat, or until the gravy thickens. Reduce the heat to low, return the patties to the gravy, cover, and continue to cook for another 15 minutes.
