Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
1.5 teaspoon baking powder
1 tsp salt 1/4 cup sugar
1 big beaten egg
a third of a cup of milk
1 tbsp melted shortening (or butter)
2 medium apples
For frying, oil
Optional topping: confectioners’ sugar
Optional toppings include caramel sauce or maple syrup.

How to Make It
Collect all of the components. Preheat the oil to 370°F.

Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a mixing bowl.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk; add to the flour mixture and beat until smooth.

Mix in the melted shortening or butter thoroughly.

Peel and core the apples, then cut them into 8 wedges.

Dip apple wedges in batter, allowing excess to drip off, and carefully lower into heated oil.

Cook for 4 minutes, or until golden brown.

Serve with syrup or caramel sauce on the side.
